Diagnostic steps (in order, free/cheap before expensive)

  1. Two methods that work — Method 1: The Geo Method (best for routine cleaning):
  2. Empty the tank completely and close the valve.
  3. Add 2 cups of Calgon water softener (powdered) and 1 cup of laundry detergent (powdered Tide works well).
  4. Fill the tank approximately 2/3 full with fresh water through the toilet.
  5. Drive for 30+ minutes — highway driving with turns and stops is ideal.
  6. Let sit overnight (longer is better).
  7. Drive again the next day, then dump and flush thoroughly.
  8. Repeat after one week if sensors haven't cleared.
  9. Method 2: The Ice Method (heavy-duty cleaning for stubbornly stuck sensors):
  10. Empty the tank and close the valve.
  11. Pour 1-2 bags of ice cubes through the toilet into the black tank.
  12. Add water until the tank is approximately half full.
  13. Add 1 cup of dish soap (Dawn works well).
  14. Drive for 30-45 minutes. The ice acts as a mild abrasive, mechanically scrubbing the probes as it tumbles.
  15. Dump and flush thoroughly.
  16. Repeat if needed.

DIY vs. call a tech

Both methods are DIY and use household products. Avoid pouring harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaner into RV tanks — they damage seals and rubber components. If two rounds of either method fail to clear the sensors, the issue is likely a damaged sensor wire or failed probe, not waste buildup.
